Isleene never saw the man before she bumped into him. One moment, she was walking along, the next moment she ran into a very distressed looking man. "Oh, excuse me sir..." She glanced around, a bit confused as to where in the hell he could've popped up from. He nodded absently to her and started to walk off. A bit annoyed, Isleene continued her way to Wonderland's Ashes, leaving Lewis on the street to ponder his situation.

Gregor watched the demonstration with the same sense of awe that he always presented over new gizmos. Sure, there was nothing new here, he had seen this demonstration before. It was loud, and awesome. So as Lewis left with the gun, he watched, his face showing the sterotypical glare of goblin avarice.

When Contessa stormed over to Nathan, he stepped to Nathan's side, not out of respect, or even really fear that she would do anything, for he neither respected Nathan nor thought anyone could bring him harm, not easily. No, he stepped in so that he could be involved with the exchange.

Halfway across the factory district, Ivan Jacobsen entered the lowly tavern, Wonderland's Ashes. He was dressed like a vagabond, his clothes tattered and worn, his face grubby, but in his hands was a large block of very expensive Italian marble. Without looking directly at anyone, he sat down at a table, set the block upon it (causing the table to groan in protest at the weight). Then he simply stared at the block of marble.

Slowly, the stone began to reshape, moving only slightly faster than glass at room temperature, just fast enough that you could see a change in the shape, subtle, but there, every few minutes. But too slow for you to notice if you were watching.

Everyone in the tavern realized that this man was one of the rare gifted, a Mind Carver. Usually, they had domain over one or two materials, wood or stone or clay, and could shape it with thier very thoughts. They were much sought after by the wealthy... why was he here?

Jim left the factory late, after finishing up a few repairs on one of the big machines. He was a dwarf working in the steam engine plant. He waddled out past the gate, when he was stopped by an Enforcer. It was huge, less than half man, mostly machine, a smokestack rose out from its back, and a human face was suspended in a mass of tubes and wires. Four gigantic arms sprouted from its side, and it rested on two squat legs, from which steam would occasionally vent as the hydraulics that maintained its balanced released pressure.

In a monotone, it demanded an explanation for Jim's presence.

"Why, I work 'ere! I was fixin' the 'ssembly line."
"Present identification."

The dwarf fumbled for his wallet, and in his fear, it slipped from his hands and fell down a sewer grating. "Shit."

The Enforcer pronounced that it was arresting the dwarf for a variety of charges, not the least of which was littering (for throwing the wallet away), and failing to present identification upon request.

If the dwarf hadn't run away in his fear, he would have lived. As it was, when his body was found and identified, it would be a closed casket funeral.

It took a few minutes for the ringing to cease from Contessa's ears. Her elven heritage gave her a heightened sense of hearing and that was in fact an incumberance at this particular moment in time. She watched as Lewis grabbed the gun then took off up the stiars. She could see lips moving but having never had much use for the art of reading lips, she knew not a word that was said. She shook her head once for good measure to make sure all the ringing was out. She was glad now that Franny was with Thom because had she been with Contessa at this point in time, it might have damaged her frail ears. She was only a little bit elven and mostly human as far as Contessa knew. She had no knowledge of Daniel being anything other than human but she had never thought to ask. Perhaps she should do that when all of this was over.

These thoughts led her to yet anohter question. How did Nathan know Thom and why did he have a map of her father's home in this place. She wanted to know the answer to the latter more than the first. Could her father have been involved with the Technocracy as well? She wasn't sure how or why but it could have been possible. She did not know much about her father's business ventures only that he had a whole lot of money and owned several of the factories that many of her friends slaved at. He was also a bit of a tycoon in the automobile industry. That is why she could not get a job at any of them and had to resort to prostitution. Her father had sent out word that she was disowned and not to employ her, hoping that she would change her mind about her refusal to marry the father of her child and have to come back home to him. But she did not, she would not give in to his demands. She did not love Daniel nor did she really have any recollections of ever feeling anything for him.

She just not, in this moment, found that odd. How could she have had a child so willingly with a man when she didn't even remember a thing about their relationship? Oh well, she assumed it must not have been that important and her lack of remembrance in that department could mean only one thing: he was as lousy a lover as he was a father. She had obviously had sex with him once upon a time but since Franny had been born she had only been with a few men who were regular clients of hers. Most of them were in fact friends of her father who had always admired her from afar when she would attend the upscale social gatherings and now they could live out their fantasies since she had become a "lady of ill-repute". They got many things for their money. They got the fantasy, the knowledge of knowing it was wrong to sleep with the daughter of a friend and knowing that were they to be found out it would have been highly frowned upon. Those things only added to the experience that was Contessa. But none of this was important right now.

She turned her thoughts back to the present as everyone else in the room seemed to still be regaining their composure from the gun blast. Many were looking at the wall with a bit of awe. Although some of these people had been with this group for a rather long time, not all had seen anything of this sort. Contessa walked over and pulled Nathan to the side a bit, glancing to see if Anna had any reaction to this.

"I need to ask you something." Nathan said nothing so Contessa continued. "Well, two things really. First off, how do you know Thom and secondly, why is there a map of my father's home in the back room upstairs."

"So you did snoop. I should have expected that from you."

Contessa became visiblly angered by that statement. "Sir, do not address me as if you know me." She raised an eyebrow and placed her hands on her hips. "Now tell me what business you have with my father!"

Lewis' ears were still ringing from the blast as he got up and grabbed the gun out of the dwarf's hands.

"How did you do that?" he asked. As he tried to remove the ammunition clip with his shaking hands, "I hope you're not suggesting I helped build this! Its too powerful, I've never even seen this modification before."

"No-one's saying you built this," Nathan said reassuringly, "But it is your companies work, check it for yourself."

Gregor moved in front of the steps as Lewis backed away from the others, "Thats impossible! I'm meant to have access to every project we're working on. If something like this was being developed I would have known."

"Yet here it is," Gregor answered, "You're obviously not as important as you thought you were."

Lewis took a deep breath and visibly calmed himself down, "I'm going to need time to look at this weapon. Unless you can get me some written information it will take me a long time to replicate it." He walked towards Gregor, "Excuse me please."

"Let him go," Nathan said. Lewis fled into the room upstairs, wondering who had gone behind his back and built such a terrible weapon in secret. A thought occurred to him, what if the rest of the company knew about this? He started to wonder if it would ever be safe for him to go home.

Nathan walked downstairs, to the shooting range that was set up there. Magically soundproof walls kept nosy neighbors from hearing anything. He addressed everyone once again.

"Now, I shall demonstrate exactly what the Technocracy can do. Lewis, do you recognize those rifles over there?" He pointed to a table where lay two huge guns.

Lewis walked over and inspected them closely. "Yes, they appear to be CG-670s, except this one appears to have a slight modification...."

"That modification is because your company makes special rifles for the Technocracy. Watch this." Nathan motioned to a dwarf standing next to the table. He picked up the normal rifle, aimed, and fired a shot down the range. It hit dead center into a thick paper target's chest, punching a fist sized hole in it.

"Now, the Technocracy gun."

The dwarf picked up the second rifle, moved down to a different range away from everyone, and aimed at an identical paper target. Nathan covered his ears, along with Gregor and Anna. Contessa, puzzled, followed suit, but Lewis was staring too intently at the rifle to notice what they were doing. The dwarf fired. The recoil knocked him onto his back, and the bang made everyone wince, except Nathan, and Lewis, who simply collapsed, his ears ringing.

The paper target the dwarf fired at had been completely obliterated, along with a chunk of wall behind it.

Contessa joined the rest of the group downstairs, glancing back up seemingly a bit confused.

"Everything alright?" Lewis asked. He did not really care too much but felt obliged to her at least a little bit.

"Mhmm.. everything is okay I think. Franny shall be staying with a friend of mine. I am sure he will keep her safe." Contessa busied herself straightening her hair. She could not shake the confused feeling, as if something had just transpired that she was not aware of. There was also the feeling that she had done something similar to this before. She had the all to familiar sense of deja vue when Nathan at last ascended the stairs. She looked to him, then to Anna. There seemed to be something between the two of them. She felt a tinge of jealousy but had no idea why and quickly forced it away, replacing her scowl with a smile that could charm the pants off of just about any englishman.

Nathan continued. "To put it in it's most simple terms, this world is run by a group called the Technocrats. They combine magic and technology to produce forces that neither are capable of individually. They mostly use magic to power their technological devices. Magical items are a great source of energy, when tapped into correctly. Come, I'll show you." Nathan motioned to Gregor. "Lead Lewis and Anna down to the range, Contessa and I will be there shortly." Gregor looked petulant for a second, but when Nathan's eyes flashed for an instant, he complied hurriedly. They walked downstairs, and as soon as they were gone, Nathan turned to Contessa.

"Have you considered the safety of your child, Contessa?"

Her temper flared. "Are you threatening my child?"

He shook his head. "Not at all. But, what we do here is dangerous. I would not want her to be hurt. Have you considered leaving her with someone in the meantime?"

Contessa looked confused. "What? Who? I can't leave her with Daniel...I wouldn't trust him to keep her safe for very long at all."

Nathan smiled. "You and I have a mutual friend, I believe. Someone who loves Franny almost as much as you do, someone whom you know would die before letting her be hurt." He walked to the door, and opened it. In the doorway stood a massive giant of a man, with bristling red hair and beard. Contessa gaped.

"Thom??"

Thom smiled, and nodded. Nathan motioned the half-giant inside, and closed the door. "Thom will keep little Franny safe, and you will be free to aid us. Will you agree to this, Contessa?"

She looked a bit hesitant. "I don't know..." Nathan reached inside her and pushed just a little, just enough to erase her doubts. She craved the potential for adventure enough that a small push was all that was needed. "All right."

Nathan smiled. "Good. Now, if you would, join the others downstairs, and I shall instruct Thom on where best to hide out."

Another small push when she hesitated, and down the stairs she went. Nathan led Thom to the sleeping child, and Thom picked her up gently.

"Thom." The big man looked at Nathan, who stared him in the eyes and held his gaze. Nathan's eyes flashed, and Thom shook his head a little, as if clearing it. When he looked back at Nathan, his eyes held the gleam of intelligence.

"I feel much better now," Thom said in a deep voice. He smiled. "I'm to watch little Franny, eh? Fine by me. Better than the work I normally do for you, Nathan."

Nathan smiled. "I know, my friend. But don't get used to it overly much. There will be more work of that nature very soon." He stroked Franny's hair again. "But until then...keep my child safe."

He walked out of the map room, Thom right behind. Nathan let Thom out, and said, before closing the door, "She'll be needed later." He closed the door, and walked down the strairs for the demonstration.

Contessa smiled a bit.. more of a smirk. She knew that Anna was watching her with uncertainty and that she did not mind. "Well, dearest Mr. Jung, I do not think it would be wise of me to leave since I have been seen with not only Mr. Lewis but you and Gregor briefly though I do not know if anyone spotted us on the way here. I would much rather stay here where I know my daughter shall be safe. And if I can aid thee in any way I would be more than happy to oblige."

Anna hurried to catch up to Nathan, hoping that he would continue the conversation and reveal something that could have been a clue to his plans, but he said nothing. Instead, in silence they walked to the rooms that held the London Workers Party.

In the main room, an uncomfortable silence prevailed, everyone simply staring st each other, untrusting, and doubtless all a bit frightened. Quietly, Nathan exchanged brief words with Gregor that she could not overhear, hard as she tried, and she moved to the seat in the corner that she usually preferred, picking up a small table style loom and slowly manipulating its threads into the pattern she wanted.

Nathan stood in the center of the room, his presence commanding the attention of all the other popele in the room. "Mr Baxter, the time has come for revelations that will surely change your life as deeply as it has affacted ours. Miss Devereaux, I am deeply sorry that chance has broujht you into this deadly affair. I know your history, and that you have a child to care for, so if you wish to leave now, then please do not think we would hold it against you. You need not, however, feel compelled to leave, should you wish to stay and aid us in our goals."

Anna watched quietly, fading back into her customary near invisibility in teh shaddowed corner, the better to observe the participants. She was not entirely certain that Contessa could be trusted, and wanted to be able to watch her reactions without being obvious about it. But no one else seemed to be treating her with anything like concern as far as she could tell, and that in itself was enough to make Anna relax a bit, knowing Nathan's skill at judging a person's character.

Contessa took a seat in the dimly lit room and looked about, stopping to glance at the flag. I have seen something similar to that before though I cannot remember where... Despite all the excitement, Franny had fallen sound to sleep and was drooling a bit upon her mother's shoulder.

"Excuse me, Gregor is it? I was just wondering if there were a place that she might be able to rest for a bit?" Contessa nodded towards her child. "She has had a bit of a long day."

"I.. er.." Gregor looked a bit taken aback by the question, or he seemed to be not certain of what answer he should make.

"I can assure you, she won't do anything to undermine your.. mission or what have you."

Gregor huffed a bit in resolve and opened a door from seemingly out of nowhere. "You can put her back there. But don't ya be snooping around none."

"Thank you sir. I assure you, I will not." Contessa carried the child through the doorway and laid her upon an old cot. She sat down beside her and flashed a smile back at Gregor who frowned a bit, then shut the door behind him. Contessa looked around the room a bit then rose to turn the light of the lamp in the room up a bit to reveal many maps and schematics and other such things tacked upon the walls. Contessa looked at a few of them, some of the places were recognizable and some where not. She stopped when she came to the layout of an all too familiar building. That of her childhood home, the house of her father, Jackson Arthur Deveraux the Third. She studied the sketch for a bit, noticing a few minor details that were not as tehy should have been and also noticing that a few of the key rooms of the estate had been left off. She then began to wonder about why this was even here then she remembered the conversation Gregor and Lewis had had moments ago. Could it have been possible that her father was involved somehow with the technocracy, as it was dubbed by Gregor? She turned the light back down a bit and checked on Franny who slept soundly, then made her way back through the door in which she had came, looking to Gregor for a moment then to Lewis. She decided to leave her questions until the infamous Mr. Jung made his way to this place.
