But I'm launching a new LJ roleplaying group- future1999- a RPG set in the future- according to the science fiction of the early twentieth century. A world of robots, flying cars, zepplins and rayguns.

Nathan just smiled a tiny smile as the Owl scanned him and sent his features off to the central computer. He "watched" with his mind until he sensed the telepathic signal sent back with his damning name and ID, and just before it was received by each Owl, he reached out, and altered the signal just slightly.

"Churchill, Winston." The Owl moved on to the next person. "Packard, Hugh." Nathan sent a thoughflash to Anna, too quick for any of the Owl's detectors to notice. {Get out if you can, before they ID you.} He checked to mark the Owls' progress in scanning, and noticed that most everyone had been identified thus far. A glance back showed Anna has somehow disappeared. He smiled again. Good. Almost done here.

Nathan chose his target, a small, mousy man that no one would suspect of being the most wanted man in London. And as his ID was being received by the Owls, he altered it as well. "Jung, Nathan." As one, the Owls swung to face the little man, weapons making clacking sounds as they primed to fire.

"No, no...it's not me! I-I'm not him! No, I..." Foolishly, he turned and ran. A shot rang out, and his knee disappeared in a fountain of blood. He collapsed, screaming, and two Owls grabbed his arms and dragged him out the door. No one said a word as the rest followed.

Nathan turned and began walking out the back way, having sensed the Enforcers and Owls leaving from behind the building. He sneered at Jacobsen on his way out; a shame he had already been scanned by the Owls, he'd have made an excellent Nathan Jung.

As he exited, he thoughflashed another associate of his. {John, you and Dav meet me at the castle. Find Anna if you can, and bring her too.} Nathan smiled, a true one, one of delight. They can't stop me. No matter what they try, they won't stop me.

Michael looked from the Owls, to Nathan, Anna, and Jacobsen. Jacobsen, for his part, lay on the ground and moaned. Michael returned his gaze to the Owls. "Now see 'ear, I run a respectable establishment, an' I don' need any trouble. Look around, an' ye'll see there ain't no criminals 'ere, just men and women back from the fact'ry."

One of the Owls broke from the group, moving through the stunned patrons, looking as if he were going to talk with Michael. Instead, when he got to the bar, he pistol-whipped Michael, who fell. A moment later, Michael clawed his way back to standing, blood running freely from his brow.

"We know that he entered this establishment. We also have conclusive evidence that he has not left."

"An' what evidence would that be?"

The Owl smacked Michael with the pistol again, and this time, he took longer to rise. "Any more of that, and you will be arrested for aiding a fugitive, interfereing with an operative of an officer of the law in his duties. Nathan Jung is a dangerous subversive who is preaching nonsense. No one is to enter or leave this establishment until one of our officers has verified his identity. Anyone not on file..." he smiled, "If he is not Jung, is just as much a criminal."

Two more Owls steped forward; these had different implants than the others. The ocular enhancement was larger, and a gaslight burned on their shoulder, with a reflector focusing it like a spotlight. They each stepped to one of the bar's patrons, and there was an audible click, as a shutter closed, and a set of relays smacked shut. A telepathic signal flew from their systems, through the extensive connections in the city, where they arrived at the central difference engine beneath police headquaters, which itself poured over specially encoded glass plates, containing images and information of everyone in the city. Each of the Owls recieved that information, and as they verified the identity of each patron, they spoke their names aloud. "Nevitt, Lisa", "Powers, Stanely", and so forth.

"Jacobsen, Ivan. He is injured." Ivan muttered, "I fell," but he spares a withering look for Nathan. The Owl notices this, and starts moving towards Nathan, positioning himself to load his information.

Subject:Let's see if this can be shocked back into life...
Time:03:06 am
Nathan watched with amusement as Jacobsen begged Anna to allow him to use her image for his marble work. Still, he thought, it seems strange that a Mind Carver would come into this part of the city to find a model. Either he's simply got some strange artists' fascination with the downtrodden, or there's something else going on here. Perhaps a quick probe is in order. But as he reached his mind out toward Jacobsen's, he realized that he wasn't getting anything at all. Not from anyone. Just a strange kind of mental static. He frowned. Nothing like this had ever happened before. He pushed against the static, strained with all his mental prowess. Finally, like a balloon, the static bubble burst, and Nathan did not like what he felt outside.

"Anna! We're leaving! Now!" Anna started, and quickly began to go to him, a little frightened by the raw panic she saw on his face, heard in his voice. He never showed such emotion. But Jacobsen grabbed her arm.

"No, please! You must help me!"

Nathan strode forward, eyes flashing, just as Anna wrenched her arm free. The psionic jolt lifted Jacobsen and slammed him back into the bar, cracking both wood and bone. The wake of the jolt shattered the marble block. Jacobsen moaned where he lay, as shocked onlookers gasped and stepped back. Nathan took Anna's wrist and began to quickly walk to the door, but he was too late.

A dozen or more Owls burst through the doorway, weapons at the ready. Several in the crowd screamed, and panic began to take hold. Nathan pulled Anna toward the back, but stopped. He could sense three Enforcers waiting that way, along with more Owls. He turned back, cursing, just as one of the Owls that had burst in stepped forward and spoke.

"We're here for Nathan Jung. Produce him, and you all go free. Resist, and you'll be arrested."

Subject:Ivan Jacobsen...
Time:12:15 pm
... eyes Anna, examines his rock, then looks back at her. "Wait a moment. I will return. I will show you what I want from you, and then we can discuss payment."

Anna looks at him increduously, her eyes burning holes in his back as he walks outside. Still, she stays, more from curiousity than anything else. Whatever he intends to show her, if it is lewd, it won't be shown in the bar, and if it is, then Michael will make short work of him.

As if on cue, Michael calls out to her, softly, "Anna dear, shall I keep the lad out?"

"No, at least, not yet."

Ivan returns, holding a cobble he has pried from the street. Anna steps back, not sure of what he's planning, when he sets it down beside the marble. "I don't want to waste my marble in a demonstration," he offers by way of explanation. With that, he stares at the cobble, and begins waving his fingers about, humming softly. Much more rapidly than the marble, the cobble shifts, though Ivan is obviously straining himself for the quick display. A moment later, a well formed cameo of Anna's face rises from the stone.

Ivan releases his breath in a pant. "That is why I want you. You have a look, a charisma. You have turned a lowly cobble into a king's bauble, and now I want you to work the same alchemy on my marble."

Time:02:12 pm
Anna went over to where Nathan stood discussing vague details of their plans with Lewis and Contessa. "I have to get back to the Ashes, the others are waiting there for word of our progress. And I should get back to my brother at some point before this night is over...."

"Of course, Anna," Nathan replied, "we'll be just behind you, after we've gone over a bit more of this. And do let them know that the pub is no longer safe for meeting of this sort anymore, not with the Technocrats watching it as I'm sure they will be now."

She left, sneaking back into the shaddows halfway between worlds, so that if she could be seen at all, it was as nothing more than a faint shadow drifting across the wall as the clouds of smoke passed over the moon. IN time she arrived at Wonderland's Ashes, and found the table of increasingly drunken dwarves. "We have him, and we're to be scarce here. Too many Owls about these days...." She turned to the bar, about to order a drink, when a man she had never seen spoke to her.

"Excuse me, girl, but how much do you charge?"

"I beg your pardon? I do nothing that requires me to have a price. If you're looking for a night of tossing in the loft, you might try over at taht table," she said, indicating where the other night birds waited, hoping to attract attention.

"Yes, but none of them look right, I want you instead."

"And your desires, then, mean that you may turn an honest girl to a whore? I think not. Besides,' she said, taking in his bedraggled state, "I don't think you could afford any of the girls here. Most of them have standards, and are not likely to take on a charity case." At some point, she noticed, Nathan, Lewis, and Contessa had entered, and were watching the exchange with various degrees of interest. Lewis looked uncomfortable, Nathan looked amused, and Contessa...well, looked like Contessa. Anna could never really tell whether her emotins were genuine, with her face painted to conceal any sort of blushing, and features schooled into a faintly amused, faintly bored, cynical beauty, as her default expression. Any conversation she made seemed like an act, with her face as a prop.

"Payment is not an issue, he said, indicating teh massive piece of marble behind him.

"A rock. You wish to pay with a rick? And what, pray tell, wold I do with that?"

Contessa did not react much to the things that Nathan had said because to do so would probably give Gregor some idea that things were not necessarily as he had heard. Instead she merely watched Nathan walk away, a sudden twinge of emptiness struck her and she did her best to push it away. Her thoughts went back to three years past and the things that she had done in some of her more desperate of hours. She then knew why she cared not about Daniel's heritage nor did she remember much about their history together. It was not he who she had loved for that brief period of her life. It was not he who had fathered Francesca but another man. She felt, yet again the longing that had once consumed her nights as well as her days. She sent out thoughts to him, whoever he may be and whereever his life may have taken him. She sent him the pain that she now felt as well as the joy she had felt in the few brief months that their affair had lasted. It was strange what a little over three year's had done to distort her memory. She had lived so long with keeping the lie intact that she had begun to believe it herself, at least until now. She had only began her affair with Daniel after she had already became with child. Oh sure, her and Daniel had been dating for several months but it was not until she knew she must have someone to take the blame that she seduced him. afterall, what was she to do? Tell her father that some man she barely knew had gotten her pregnant then taken off never to be seen again? She laughed a bit at the thought, then looked around the range. most everyone was gone except for Gregor who seemed to be making up some sort of schematics. She decided to at least attempt to be of a bit of use, and she made her way up to the stairs. She found the blueprint of her father's home and took it from the wall. Searching out a writing utencil, she began to make the necessary adjustments to the schematics in order for it to be true to life. several key elements had been neglected and having spent her entire childhood in the place, she had often found certain passages and such that had not been marked on the map. She remembered thinking that she had gotten by with something as a child and that maybe no one else knew about the secret tunnels that ran through and even beneath the house, but now she thought otherwise. These were probably just passageways leading to the labratories and such that her father and his employees worked on whatever things they provided for the Technocracy.

she had just finished up and was looking it over once more when she heard the door open then close as Anna, Lewis and Nathan entered. She stood, walking over to the wall and placing the blueprint back where she had gotten it. She brushed imaginary dirt from her small hands then stared at them intently for a moment. Franny had her hands. Although it had not been long since she had left with Thom, Contessa missed her already. Contessa might have been questionable in many things but when it came to having love for her child, there was nothing lacking. She had always done the best she could for Franny and had spent many nights in tears because she could not do more. Things would have been so much easier if that strange man had not come into her life but then again she would have probably found herself married miserably to some shirt and unknowingly funding the group that enslaved all those she had come to care about in the deep recesses of London.

Nathan and Anna stepped through the hidden doorway into the alley to find Lewis sitting with his back to the wall and the gun in his hands. He had been doing his best to take it apart, to check to see if the modification couldn't have been added on later by some other company.

"Have we given you enough proof?" Nathan asked, "Are you going to help us?"

"There is someone inside my own business who has been aiding to these... these Technocrats." Lewis answered, as he got up, "The worst thing is, I don't know who it is. I don't even know if its safe for me to go home anymore. If you can find me what I'll need to work I will do what-ever I can to assist you."

"Good," said Nathan, "We should go inside now. There is still a lot to do before morning."

Nathan held the door open for Anna and Lewis to go back inside, than went through himself, closing the door carefully.

Gregor smiles blandly, nodding at all the points he thinks are important. The look on his face is one of innatention, and his mind is obviously elsewhere, possibly on a redesign for his homebuilt steam-bike.

Subject:The words in italics are what Gregor hears...
Time:10:42 am
Nathan smirked inwardly as he noticed Gregor sidle up close. Always has to know what's going on, that one does. I suppose it's because he thinks he's in charge. Nathan employed a trick he usually used when Gregor was listening in when not wanted. As he spoke, he subtly altered Gregor's perception of the words coming from his lips, so that he heard what Nathan wanted him to hear, and not what he was actually saying.

"Contessa, your father is one of the Five, the group of men that run the Technocracy."..."Contessa, all we basically know is that your father might somehow be involved with the Technocracy."

"Gregor doesn't know this, and I am keeping him from hearing what we say, so make sure you never speak of this to anyone but Anna or myself."..."We are currently investigating the possibility, and the plans are in case we should ever confirm those suspicions."

"All Gregor and his idiots know is that your father is wealthy, so they plan to rob him one day, to fund the movement. They have no clue that to do so is to court death for all of them."..."I hope that you will decide to help us, and with luck, your father is innocent, and could perhaps be persuaded to aid us."

"Remember, Contessa, speak of this to no one but Anna or myself. We are the only ones you can trust here."..."..................." Gregor heard nothing, only saw Nathan and Contessa looking at each other silently for a few seconds, then Contessa nodded. Nathan couldn't resist throwing the goblin off a little.

Nathan walked toward the stairs. "Come, Anna. Our young friend Lewis has straddled the fence long enough. Now is the time for a decision."
